From Indus to Rhein
Saranga’s music brings together many different colours of the rich music of the valleys of Indus and Ganges. Elements of classical ragas, mystic tradition and lively folk rhythms combine to receive a light breeze from the jungle of world music. Saranga (Sanskrit): Colourful.
SARANGA started public performance in the summer of 2008 and since then the band has played on various stages. Among other concerts
Saranga has performed at '' An Evening With Vandana Shiva'' in Freiburg,
at the vernissage of Roger Willemsen's book '' Afghanische Reise'',
at Tamburi Mundi Festival and at The Bollywood Filmfestival, Stuttgart.
SARANGA's debut Album *talking to the river* is out now.
Hussain Abid: singer of the band, learned the basics of Indien/ pakistani classical music from Ustad Chotay Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustad Dilshad Hussain in Lahore, Pakistan.
He writes and composes songs for Saranga. He has also written lyrics for three compositions by Prem Joshua for the album '' luminous Secrets''.
His poetry has been published in renowned Urdu literary journals for thirty years. He is author of three books of verse.
Katharina Mlitz-Hussain: A graduate in violin from Musikhochschule Frankfurt, is a versatile violinist playing with numerous bands in genres Chanson, indian/pakistani, african, tango western classical and world jazz fusion. She has 8 albums to her credit. http://www.geigenunterricht-freiburg.de/
Peter Vonessen studied percussion in Munich and Strassbourg and is engaged in different projects in the field of jazz, fusion, rock and big band. In tabla playing, he is a disciple of Hom Nath Upadhyaya (Banaras Gharana), Kathmandu, for last fifteen years. Ralf Tonding joined Saranga in 2013. He is a graduated jazz saxophon player and along with enriching Saranga with his Sopran Sax, he also playes bansuri (indien Flut). He studies bansuri with his Dehli based teacher Harsh Wardhan since 1992. Besides playing in different bands, he teaches at Musiclab Emmendingen. http://www.tonding.info
Saranga also performs with the marvellous dancer Liga Saukante. Well versed in different dance forms, Liga Saukante started dancing at the age of three. She studied lithvian folk dance, tango, salsa, flamenco and south indien classical dance, Barat Natyam. She improvises to Saranga's music, dancing away the borders from indien to contemporary dance. Saranga also stages performances with the traveller and photographer Christoph Meyer. Christoph Meyer has a keen eye for the mystic elements, sketches of life on the faces of passer- bys and the serenity of himalayan landscape. His numerous travels to India and Nepal enriched his life and camera with images of unforgettable beauty and depth. Saranga performs live to his large screen slide show.
